My approach to counseling is to meet the individual and unique needs of each client. Therefore, I utilize various therapies and techniques to assist my client in meeting their goals--including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Play Therapy Techniques, EMDR, and Family Systems Therapy. It is my desire to walk along with each client as they move towards mental and emotional health. Counseling is provided for children (5+), adolescents, and adults.
DBT SKILLS GROUPS
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a proven therapy for individuals who struggle to control their emotions and behaviors. As a trained DBT Skills leader, I offer classes to adolescents, teens, and adults with the goal of providing education, cultivating mindfulness practices, and teaching effective coping skills. The classes are taught weekly and cover the modules of Mindfulness, Walking the Middle Path, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Sign up has been suspended until further notice, due to COVID-19.
Often, memories of traumatic events or fears of the future can hinder us from living an adaptive emotionally charged healthy life. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that helps to facilitate the processing of traumatic and distressing experiences to a more positive resolution. During EMDR therapy the client attends to emotionally disturbing material in brief sequential doses while simultaneously focusing on some form of external bilateral stimulus. I find EMDR to be helpful for all ages.
Therapeutic play can be helpful for children dealing with social or emotional deficits. Play is useful to help them learn to communicate better, change their behavior, develop problem-solving skills, and relate to others more positively. Through the use of art therapy, sand tray therapy, games, miniatures/dolls, and role-plays, etc., children are able to work through those problems that they may not be able to articulate. I also assist the parents to facilitate meaningful and validating play with their children.
Relationship counseling is available for couples and families. I attempt to provide clients with useful tools to utilize within their relationships and strive to help them to improve communication, clarify expectations, determining their emotional needs, and increasing understanding.
Couples dealing with marital betrayal are assisted through individual and marriage therapy to assist in the recovery process.
Group therapy can be an ideal form of therapy for some. Usually consisting of 5-10 individuals who are targeting a specific problem/issue (e.g. anxiety, phobias, grief, low self-esteem, etc.), group therapy can provide the needed support, an engaging sounding board, and the accountability to help some clients move steadily towards mental and emotional health. Group Therapies are not currently available.
